Choosing the Best Precast Concrete Wet Well

Choosing the Best Precast Concrete Wet Well

September 19, 2022

Used in pump stations, a precast concrete wet well collect wastewater and feature either a submersible or external pump to remove it when it exceeds pre-set levels. Made of concrete, fiberglass, or polymer, each material provides different advantages and disadvantages.

Concrete wet wells are commonplace because they are durable, easy to make, and affordable. Reinforced with rebar, a precast concrete wet well is known for its strength and toughness. Other solutions for wet wells include the use of polymer cement, which can be fabricated in a wide variety of configurations to provide different performance characteristics, and fiberglass. Fiberglass wet wells offer many of the same benefits as precast concrete wet wells or polymer ones and are usable in both vertical and horizontal configurations.

Precast Concrete Wet Well

Used primarily for wastewater management and containment, precast concrete wet wells produced by Mack Industries offer a combination of durability and protection from erosion. For example, Mack mixes Penetron and/or Xypex crystalline additives into its precast concrete mix to protect against minor crack leakage over the lifespan of the wet well structure. It can also coat the wet well’s exterior to protect against aggressive soil conditions at the site. Used in conjunction with other buried infrastructure, a precast concrete wet well can take a variety of forms, including single wells, dual wells, or multilevel and multi-compartment wells. When installed correctly they are watertight, thus preventing wastewater from contaminating the groundwater.

Contractors, developers, builders, and municipal project managers select Mack precast concrete wet wells for several reasons. They’re strong, durable, and cost-effective and benefit from sustainable manufacturing practices and industry-leading quality control systems. Mack precast package pump stations are available in a variety of designs such as submersible rail systems, wet well and dry well types, self-priming systems, and flooded suction configurations. Mack package pump stations with precast concrete wet wells offer a single-source contact that can tailor your pump station with pumps and electrical components that will meet your specific needs. From engineering to installation, Mack is the only choice to meet your sewage pump station needs.

Wet Versus Dry Wells

Users can opt for traditional pump station configurations, where the pumps occupy a dry well adjacent to the wet well or install submersible pumps in the wet well. The benefits of having a dry well include ease of access to the pump, while servicing submersibles requires their removal and factory repair due to their complex sealing requirements.

Factory standard pump stations are generally less expensive than custom designs. Custom designs enable the owner to specify the most desired features, and the ability to incorporate the specific construction materials can make the station more robust in the face of local conditions.
